Which Writer? Which Book?

I was wondering which writer or which book got you thinking that you also could write, or had the desire to express yourself through writing. For me it was Kerouac's Dharma Bums. Something about that book made sense to me back then. Don't know that it still does, but for sure it set me off.

About a year and a half ago I was living in Kyoto, Japan working as an English teacher. The company I was with went belly up due to some very nasty corporate scandal leaving me penniless and idle in a faraway place. For no particular reason, I picked up a copy of Stephen King’s “On Writing”. In it, the master of modern horror said something to the effect of “If you can make a living at this (writing) you had better just do it.” Simple words, but true.

To my surprise and delight, apparently I can. I received an honorable mention in a short story contest the next year and, somewhat on a whim, applied to a bunch of MFA programs. Despite the heavy competition I was accepted to the University of Colorado at Boulder starting in the Fall of ’09. Now I find myself in a much more stable position back in the states and gaining valuable work experience. I’ve always thought of myself as a regular career kind of guy, but this kind of opportunity doesn’t come knocking just every day. What’s a young man to do eh?
