The University of Wyoming’s Creative Writing Master of Fine Arts program is an intensive 40-hour studio degree in poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction. Special features include opportunities for interdisciplinary study, supported by a wide range of university departments, and a required professional internship on campus, in the community, or farther afield, ensuring the acquisition or polishing of “real-life” writing skills. The Program in Creative Writing offers a two-year Master of Fine Arts Degree in Creative Writing in the areas of fiction and poetry. The MFA program is small with typically six new students admitted each year. It is also somewhat unusual in that fiction writers are admitted in even-numbered years while poets are admitted in odd-numbered years. This alternating admissions schedule allows us to keep our classes small and to focus enirely on one group of writers for their entire two years with us. (more…)

1. Admission

Admission to the M.F.A. degree program in creative writing is based primarily on the excellence of a substantial writing sample in fiction, nonfiction or poetry. An admissions committee made up of members of the English graduate faculty with specialties in creative writing examine applications for excellence and promise. Normally, prospective candidates for the degree of Master of Fine Arts are expected to have completed work in an undergraduate discipline resulting in a Bachelor degree in English. Whidbey Writers Workshop - MFA Workshop

The Whidbey Writers Workshop MFA Program is the first in the country - and perhaps in the world - to be offered not by a college or university but by an organization of writers. In this, it resembles many free-standing arts institutions offering degrees in music, art, dance and theater. Authorized by the Washington State Higher Education Coordinating Board, WWW MFA classes began in August of 2005. In August of 2007 the Workshop celebrated its first graduation. (more…)
