Earlier in the week I had the pleasure of talking with Johnny Payne, the Chair of the Department of Creative Writing at the University of Texas El Paso.
The MFA at UTEP is an interesting program becasue it is the first and only fully bilingual MFA. The program offers Spanish speakers the opportunity to study creative writing, as well as work with mentors in their native language, and it is also an extremely interesting linguistic opportunity for native English speakers who speak Spanish.
As I interviewed Mr Payne, he outlined how the bilingual MFA came about, as well as what exactly a bilingual MFA program consists of. We talked about the philosophy of a “boarderless” university, and some of the challenges facing both students and faculty in this new and important MFA model. Towards the end of the interview, Mr. Payne talked a little bit about the city of El Paso, and what it offers prospective students interested in the program.

Bienvenidos al Departamento de Creación Literaria de la Universidad de Texas en El Paso (UTEP). Somos la primera y única institución en los Estados Unidos en ofrecer un Master totalmente bilingüe (inglés y español) en Creación Literaria. Adicionalmente la Universidad también otorga el título de licenciatura en Creación Literaria.
