University of British Columbia - MFA Posted on April 29th
There’s no mistaking the prominence of UBC’s Creative Writing Program, nor its excellence.
UBC graduates like Joan MacLeod, Madeleine Thien, Stephanie Bolster, Nancy Lee, Hart Hansen, Eden Robinson, Kevin Patterson and Kevin Chong tell the stories of a modern, changing Canada.
With nine separate genres, no other writing program in the world offers as many types of writing instruction, a fact made even more remarkable when you find out that for decades, UBC’s program was the only Canadian graduate program to offer a creative writing MFA.
We make it mandatory for our students to work in three separate areas, unlike most other writing programs. We’ve always believed that this literary cross-pollination is vital for the education of a writer; it is not uncommon for students come in as playwrights and leave as novelists, as Madeleine Thien - winner of the Ethel Wilson Fiction Award and the Vancouver Book Award - did.
With the launch of our Optional-Residency MFA Program in 2005 we broke new ground in Canada, making it possible for students across Canada and around the world to take part in the renowned MFA program without having to leave home, families and jobs.
