Southern New Hampshire University - MFA Creative Writing Posted on April 25th
Southern New Hampshire University, in cooperation with the New Hampshire Writers’ Project, offers a low-residency Master of Fine Arts for fiction and nonfiction writers from all genres.
The highly focused, low-residency M.F.A. prepares students to write in their chosen genre at a professional level. With three residencies on campus and two residencies online during four semesters of study, the program is also convenient and affordable for working adults.
Students study with mentoring faculty who are accomplished, award-winning writers and teachers; participate in lectures, readings and classes with nationally known visiting writers; hone their work through mentor and peer reviews; read publicly from their own work; and meet with publishing professionals in a community dedicated to creative endeavor.
The six-month workshop courses are tailored to students’ needs and creative goals. Individualized study is complemented by a 10-day on-campus session in August and a seven-day online session in February, during which mentors and their students meet to review writing projects.
The second year of the program is devoted to the completion of a book-length manuscript of professional quality, suitable for submission to editors, and a critical essay about a living writer of the student’s choice, suitable for submission to literary journals.
Graduation is held in August following the fourth semester. Students who have completed their degree work will return to campus for a few days to give public readings and lectures and take part in the graduation ceremony.
