Western Michigan University - MFA Creative Writing Posted on April 24th

The graduate program in creative writing houses students who are seeking the Master of Fine Arts degrees and the Doctorate of Philosophy in English with Creative Dissertation in fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, or poetry. Graduates of the program have gone on to publish books, found and develop literary journals, see their plays produced, and develop creative writing programs at universities around the country. Current students have published work and won awards in Glimmer Train, AGNI, The Crab Orchard Review, Mid-American Review, and many other literary journals.

Each semester, students may choose from an array of intensive workshops, forms classes, and a variety of literature seminars. One semester per year, the program offers a course in publishing. Students also have the opportunity to work as editors on the nationally published student-run journal, Third Coast. Teaching assistantships for MFA candidates provide students with the opportunity to gain experience building and developing courses in college writing. Doctoral Associates may teach courses ranging from English 266:Writing Fiction and Poetry to self-designed undergraduate literature courses.

PhD candidates may also use their Practicum to co-teach a course with a faculty member at the graduate level. Opportunities also exist for students to work on committees and as officers of the Association of Graduate English Students. During summers students may continue their studies and earn credit while attending the Prague Summer Program, where they can take workshops and attend readings with teachers, writers, and lecturers from all over the world; graduate students also have the opportunity to work as Teaching Assistants in the Prague Summer Program.
